About Exit Interview

Exit Interview is a place where current and former staff of UN agencies and international NGOs share short, anonymous stories about job cuts, contract endings, stress and leaving the sector.

What this is

People write or record a short story. A person reviews it. It goes live under a nickname, after a random delay. Readers can react, comment, and see where stories come from on a globe and in a trends dashboard.

There is also a Next Chapter section for people who found new work or a new path.

Why it exists

A published analysis of United Nations system HR statistics for 2023 to 2025 counted 13,544 jobs lost. Locally recruited and junior staff were hit hardest. Field locations were cut three times more than headquarters.

Numbers like these are easy to read past. Behind each one is a person, a family and a team. This platform gives those people a safe place to say what happened.

Who runs it

Exit Interview is run by StandbyRoster (Mai Nazzal). A small team of moderators reviews every story.

What it is not

  • It is not affiliated with, funded by or endorsed by the United Nations or any agency or NGO.
  • It is not a legal service. Nothing here is legal advice. See the Resources page for staff unions and legal help.
  • It is not a news outlet. We do not verify individual stories, and we do not investigate claims.
  • It is not a place to report misconduct. Use your organisation's formal channels for that.

How to read the numbers

Counts on this site are stories shared, not statistics. They show who chose to write here. They do not measure how many jobs were lost or how people feel across a whole organisation.

We hide any group with fewer than 5 stories, so some totals are not shown. Please quote numbers as "stories shared on Exit Interview".

Demo stories

While the platform is new, some stories are fictional examples written to show how it works. They carry a "Demo" label and will be removed.
